HEATHER GORDON: KIN

THE CARRACK MODERN ART, DURHAM | FRIDAY, AUG. 7

Durham artist Heather Gordon is the person behind the excellent "Off the Radar" series of pop-up art shows at Golden Belt. KIN, a new show of Gordon's work, extends her "How to Fold My Heart" series, where she data-mines her personal history to map coordinates for origami-like geometries. The exhibit includes large paintings, drawings and a site-specific installation that serves as a backdrop for a dance performance, The Value of Words #15 (Aug. 8 and 15, 7 p.m.), which Gordon developed with Justin Tornow & COMPANY. The installation diagrams places where the dancers have lived, turning their backgrounds into their stage. Raw numbers disperse into elegant visual representations of relationship and movement; data never looked so good. In addition to this opening reception, there's an artist talk (Aug. 13, 7 p.m.), and the show runs though Aug. 15. 6 p.m., free, 111 W. Parrish St., Durham, 704-213-6666, www.thecarrack.org. —Brian Howe
