Hearts and Daggers, Whiskey Kills the Butterflies

When: Tue., Aug. 10, 9 p.m. 2010

Country rock twang may now be predictable as a sitcom, but Hearts and Daggers rise above the cliché, thanks to frontman Kevin Wolfe's ever-improving songwriting. Sonically like Lucero's Ben Nichols without the whiskey and cigarettes, Wolfe covers the requisite territory (prison songs, murder ballads, wanderlust, wandering hearts) with a melodicism that reaches its apogee on the band's latest, ...And Then There Was Dust. Recent upstarts Whiskey Kills the Butterflies offer haunting roots rock keyed to Bradan Dotson's breathy vocal wail and fueled by crackling blues guitar, with a subtle jam band undercurrent, highlighted by "Queen Bee." Also, Dead Rabbits. —Chris Parker
