NICK JAMES, HANZ, CHOKED OUT

KINGS, RALEIGH | FRIDAY, JAN. 23

Electronica takes a deep, dark turn for this triple-bill. The young producer Hanz headlines; he pits mangled bits of noise and distorted found sounds against blown-out synthesizer lines and embattled beats, creating miniature musical dramas that hover at the threshold of dystopia and deliverance. Two of Raleigh's most active young controllers, Funkks and Blursome, combine for Choked Out, a lurching and roaring collaboration. But it's visiting Asheville beatmaker Nick James who's the real lure here: His 2014 EP, The Hawk, closes the gap between the sinister, industrial digitalism of The Haxan Cloak and Andy Stott and the party-inducing antics of EDM's frazzled hordes. He's heavy, harsh and not afraid of hype. 10 p.m., $5, 14 E. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-833-1091, www.kingsbarcade.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
