HANS RAJ HANS

MEMORIAL HALL, CHAPEL HILL | FRIDAY, MARCH 20

When the young Punjabi singer Sanam Marvi canceled this UNC-Chapel Hill show, Carolina Performing Arts didn't go for a consolation prize: Hans Raj Hans, who replaces her, is one of the most mystifying and adaptable stars of India, able to crisscross the folk and classical, pop and religious forms of his region. His Bollywood work is stylish and winking, but his more traditional fare reveals a deep, abiding love with Sufi music. (To that end, he collaborated with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.) The university is calling this program "Songs from the Land of Five Rivers," a broad reference to the region from which Hans comes rather than any specific piece of the wide catalogue he's built. Either way, expect a charming showman with a stunning smile and one of his nation's most emblematic voices. Not bad for a make-up gig. 8 p.m., $10$15, 114 E. Cameron Ave., Chapel Hill, 919-843-3333, www.carolinaperformingarts.org. —Grayson Haver Currin
