Hamell on Trial, Wigg Report

When: Fri., Oct. 7, 10 p.m. 2011

The bald, pint-sized provocateur Ed Hamell would probably be dubbed folk-punk if he hung in different circles. Indeed, he attacks his acoustic like Ike Turner on a bender. His brash lyricism is driven by biting but humorous truth. To wit, he's not afraid to imagine God frustrated by his children's self-righteous disobedience ("Don't Kill"), imagine the properties of "Coulter's Snatch" or call them like he sees them ("Go Fuck Yourself"). He's like Randy Newman exchanging the piano for an acoustic, and a scalpel for a cutlass. Bald and pissed can be beautiful, turns out. The Wigg Report opens the $5 show at 10 p.m. —Chris Parker
