Hairspray | Memorial Auditorium | Stage | Indy Week

When: July 23-31 2011

The play that proved you could successfully turn a recent live-action movie into a stage musical (and in turn, that stage musical back into a movie), the adaptation of John Waters' cult classic Cinderella story about TV dance shows and battling racism has proven an enduring and influential hit. This was a story that, when you look at it, was made for Broadway: There's nostalgia, high camp and a traditional ugly-duckling-becomes-a-swan tale all rolled into one. Those who have yet to experience the tale of Tracy Turnblad's crusade to integrate the Corny Collins Show may now do so in this new production, which runs through July 31. Most shows begin at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets run $25–$85. — Zack Smith

Price: $25-85
