The rare summer blockbuster with a wry smile and a light step, this sci-fi romp pushes the borders of the Marvel universe into deep space with a rollicking tale that's part Indiana Jones and part Star Wars. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), an American space bandit, steals an orb that turns out to contain an object of incalculable power. He finds himself crewed up with what's basically a ragtag alien version of the Avengers to evade an interstellar manhunt and save the universe from the big bad's army. Pratt charms in his first action-movie leading man role, backed by a strong cast in his fellow Guardians. This is easily the funniest and most broadly accessible Marvel movie yet, hitting all the right story beats while hilariously deflating them. Following the rather abysmal The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it makes the Marvel universe feel once again like a place worth saving.
