Green Party presidential nominee in N.C.

Former U.S. Rep and presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney of Georgia will kick off her North Carolina campaign in Durham Tuesday. McKinney is the Green Party's presidential candidate; she was nominated at the national convention in Chicago earlier this month.

Although Green Party candidates won't appear on the North Carolina ballot this November, they can still qualify as write-in candidates. Tuesday is also the deadline for turning in 500 verified signatures to qualify for statewide or federal office. The State Board of Elections will make the final determination on the signature requirement.

McKinney and representatives from several organizations will speak at 4:30 p.m. on the steps of the downtown Durham post office, 323 E. Chapel Hill St. At 6 p.m., McKinney will be at the The Know Bookstore & Restaurant, 2520 Fayetteville St., near NC Central University, for a public event.

Major issues of the Green Party and McKinney's campaign platform include single-payer universal health care, justice for the Gulf Coast and the right to return for displaced survivors, a New Deal-scale program for sustainable energy and transportation, increased educational funding and fair trade.
