When: Mon., Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote four concertos for piano and orchestra, but it's a fifth piece for this musical pairing, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, that the North Carolina Symphony will feature in a program later in the week. After a one-night performance in Southern Pines on Thursday, Sept. 13, there will be performances Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14–15, at Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall. The Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero will perform all three nights with the symphony. Tonight, as is his wont, conductor Grant Llewellyn will make an advance appearance at Quail Ridge to discuss Rhapsody, which was composed in 1934, within the context of Rachmaninoff's career. The free talk is at 7:30 p.m. —David Fellerath
