Gov. Jim Hunt & Gary Pearce

When: Thu., Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. 2010

Jim Hunt won 'em (four terms as governor) and he lost 'em (the 1984 Senate race against Jesse Helms). And as Gary Pearce, his longtime spokesman, can attest, losing sucks—especially to a racist. With Democrats licking their wounds from last week's electoral smackdown, here's a chance to consider the hard-earned lessons of Jim Hunt: A Biography from the two principals' mouths. Pearce and Hunt will both be there at 7:30 p.m. for a Q-and-A, and folks (as Hunt would say), neither is shy. A Hunt primer from his early days as a progressive working for Terry Sanford and Rich Preyer and realizing that it wasn't enough to be right: "You win in politics by being on the right side of issues according to how people see things. . . If the party didn't win, it couldn't change things." Hunt is a big fan of Barack Obama. So, governor, where did Barack go wrong? —Bob Geary

Correction (Nov. 11, 2010): An editing error substituted "for a racist" for "to a racist" in the print version of this text.
