Gourds, Patrick Sweany

When: Fri., Oct. 7, 9 p.m. 2011

"The first time I heard that reference, I was like, 'What? The Band?' Because they were phenomenal. And we're shit, you know!" Such was Kevin Russell's humorously self-deprecating response many years ago when asked how he felt about his group, Austin roots rockers the Gourds, drawing frequent comparisons to The Band in reviews. He admitted, though, that over the years, the likeness had grown more apt, given how the Gourds used accordion, fiddle and mandolin to accent vocal harmonies that were sometimes backwoods high-lonesome, sometimes swamp-steeped groove. This year, they went to the source, recording their new disc, Old Mad Joy, in the Woodstock studio of The Band's drummer, Levon Helm. If the result isn't quite Music From Big Pink, it might well pass for that big green house just down the block. Patrick Sweany opens the 9 p.m. show; tickets are $15. —Peter Blackstock
