In his pulpy and stylish adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling potboiler, David Fincher casts Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy, erstwhile lovebirds in a decaying marriage. When Amy disappears, leaving behind envelopes labeled "Clue," Nick becomes the chief suspect. In skewering modern marriage, the film combines the rawness of Revolutionary Road with the most stilted discourse this side of Eyes Wide Shut. We're spared any incisive examination of motives and consequences, because Nick is a philandering freeloader and Amy is a sociopathic femme fatale forged from easy stereotypes. This film surpasses Fincher's lifeless adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as a misanthropic screed on gender dynamics. But the hyper-cynicism feeds off our modern plight without really illuminating it. It's a twisty journey, but a rather bored game.
