Global Cardboard Challenge

When: Oct. 1-5 2013

Ingredients for a world: magic markers, tape, scissors and, of course, cardboard. That's the heart of 9-year-old Caine Monroy's story. He built an elaborate arcade in the garage of his father's Los Angeles auto parts store in 2011, opening it for business. No one came, until a documentary filmmaker stumbled upon it while shopping for a replacement door handle. His subsequent film, Caine's Arcade, has launched a global movement to celebrate the jolt that cardboard gives to a kid's imagination. The Museum of Life and Science takes part in the second annual Global Cardboard Challenge—with participants in 70 countries—providing all the materials for visitors to help construct a giant collaborative machine Tuesday through Saturday, when it will be unveiled to the public. —Chris Vitiello
