Giselle | Memorial Auditorium | Stage | Indy Week

When: May 16-19 2013

In a bold artistic statement from a relatively young company, Carolina Ballet is finally attempting this definitive work. A touchstone of the Romantic era of ballet, Giselle has been performed by every major ballet company in the world, with the title role portrayed by some of the greatest dancers of all time, including Alicia Alonso, Margot Fonteyn and Alessandra Ferri. Giselle's love Albrecht, meanwhile, has been brought to the stage by the likes of Vaslav Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. In producing this tale of the peasant girl whose passion for the engaged duke transcends that of life and death, Carolina Ballet artistic director Robert Weiss is daring to follow some of the greatest productions in the history of the medium, but dancers Lilyan Vigo and Marcelo Martinez might be up to the challenge. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday–Saturday, with additional 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday, plus a show at Durham Performing Arts Center on May 23. —Zack Smith
