Music worth leaving the house to hear this week

George Higgs
The Cave
Saturday, July 19, 7:30 p.m. (early show)

Edgecombe County bluesman George Higgs keeps the Piedmont blues tradition alive with his raw electric renditions of classics and his interesting catalog of original tunes. Accompanying himself on harp, Higgs gets his point across in a rugged, no-frills style. Recipient of the N.C. Folk Heritage award in '93, Higgs is now sponsored by Tim Duffy's Music Maker blues foundation, which promotes and aids both the careers and lifestyles of older bluesmen and women. He played a rollicking set at the Festival for the Eno recently, and can soon be heard slamming out his rough and tumble blues on the Sugar Hill label with local playwright/writer Kent Cooper. --Grant Britt

Esotic Re-presents Repurposed Pop Perfection
Kings Barcade
Tuesday, July 22, 9:30 p.m.

This movie night applies the mash-up phenomena to music videos instead of songs. Mash-ups splice various musicians' work with another's of variant likeness (a la the vocal track to "Push It" by Salt n' Pepa matched with the instrumentation to the Stooges' "No Fun"), Look for Missy Elliott vs. the Cure, the Osmonds vs. Prodigy, etc. Super digital fun and there's no cover. For more information: 831-1005. Free. --Chris Toenes
