Get On Up

Rated PG-13 138 min. 2014

In director Tate Taylor's James Brown biopic, the soul legend is exquisitely portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. The familiar rags-to-riches-to-redemption arc doesn't make Brown's life any less remarkable. The film doesn't shirk from linking Brown's rough childhood with his adult demons, which included drug and domestic abuse, legal woes and tense relations with his band, especially his long-suffering best friend. However, the film falls short in connecting Brown's upbringing and his musical genius. It occasionally pulls punches, and it's questionable whether one can paint a whole portrait of Brown's life in a PG-13 movie. But this is an informed, dynamically performed celebration.
