Future Islands, Lonnie Walker, Veelee, NAPS

When: Fri., Nov. 19, 9 p.m. 2010

Two of the state's best bands (Lonnie Walker and Veelee), one of the state's best exports (Future Islands emigrated from Greenville to Baltimore, pre-hype) and one of the state's most interesting new acts (NAPS): The tough task would be convincing you to be anywhere else tonight. This has been a banner year for Future Islands, who released a heartsick, dance-crazed, sweat-and-tears epic called In Evening Air on Thrill Jockey at the start of the summer. American and European tours have followed, as well as a new 7" split with Lonnie Walker, whose side of that platter takes what's best about the Raleigh band—boundless energy and carefree bustle—and grafts it to a perfect love song. It presages, I predict, a banner 2011. Veelee's debut LP, The Future Sight, functions similarly. In seven songs, Veelee offers seven different iterations of intricate pop charm, and they're each winners. NAPS—like Modest Mouse coming down off a psychotropic high against the washed rays of an autumn gloaming—open. —Grayson Currin
