Full Frame Pop Docs

When: Wed., Aug. 7, 7 p.m. 2013

If you grant that photography, in its infancy, was about capturing objective reality in an image, you have to agree that the medium's adolescence has had to do with the ways photographers create subjective realities through their image making. Gregory Crewdson represents a logical endpoint in this reading. His grand-scale, twilit stills of American suburban and small-town scenes, painstakingly staged by crews rivaling those of feature films, evoke the surrealism of Lynch and Hitchcock while building on the haunting leitmotifs of Diane Arbus and Edward Hopper. The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival folks present Brief Encounters, a deep look into Crewdson's process that director Ben Shapiro shot over a decade and released last year. Shapiro will attend. The Full Frame Theater is located on the American Tobacco Campus, on the ground floor of the Power Plant building just north of the Lucky Strike tower. —Chris Vitiello
