FSP@PPG: The Artist as Researcher

When: Thu., Aug. 31, 12-1:15 p.m. 2017

At best, when we behold or hear the things artists make, we feel more than perceive the research and labor that went into their creation. But this panel discussion at Power Plant Gallery, at which a light lunch will be served, draws that background into the foreground for an illuminating look at the workings of artist-scholars. The panelists are current Power Plant artist-in-residence Julia Gartrell, a contemporary sculptor rooted in Appalachian craft; M.C. Taylor (aka Hiss Golden Messenger), a musician who has previously drawn on photo archives of rural life to inform his neo-rustic songs; Howard L. Craft, a playwright and poet who explores black American history in works such as Freight; and Aya Shabu, a choreographer and dancer with expertise in African diaspora traditions. Learn about the research methods behind their works in a talk that might inspire you to crack the books yourself.—Brian Howe
