Frontier Ruckus

When: Sat., Oct. 15, 8:30 p.m. 2011

Frontier Ruckus frontman Matthew Milia's lonesome tenor croon wavers like a wounded Avett Brother, with a similar mix of earnest longing and hard-bitten wisdom. The band, which is on the same label that launched the Avetts (N.C.-based Ramseur Records), is deeply informed by bluegrass. Parched mountain strings underscore Milia's rueful meditations and picked-over scars from a childhood spent in decaying Detroit suburbs. Zachary Nichols' horn playing spurs the baroque side of the quintet's personality, bringing out a Sufjan Stevens element in otherwise spare country material with a slow, deliberate melancholia that recalls early Will Oldham/ Palace. Milia is a particularly gifted lyricist, keenly evoking a wintery ghost-town vibe on the band's second album, last year's terrific Deadmalls and Nightfalls. —Chris Parker
