Raleigh
FIRST FRIDAY
DOWNTOWN—This month's First Friday looks as inviting as a crisp October evening. Between the drinks, we'll stop by Rebus Works from 6-10 p.m. to check out Transient Structures by Mario Marzan, an alternative reality inspired by hurricanes in his native Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, at Artspace, a video installation-in-progress, Time-Based Media Invitational, is on view with video sculptures, Web-based works and performance elements, along with new work in the other galleries. Check out www.rebusworks.us and www.artspacenc.org for details.—Karlie Justus

BLUE MOUNTAIN
HIDEAWAY BBQ—Blue Mountain canoed in on alt.country's first wave; that's them right there on the cover of No Depression's second issue. The equally powerful trio The Tim Lee 3 opens. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and the music starts at 9:30 p.m. —Rick Cornell

Chapel Hill
PAMINA DEVI
UNC CAMPUS—As part of a five-city U.S. tour, the Khmer Arts Ensemble arrives at Memorial Hall. Using traditional Cambodian costumes, dance and music, Pamina Devi: A Cambodian Magic Flute is inspired by Mozart's opera and will retain the opera's classic themes, but not its music. Visit www.carolinaperformingarts.org or call 843-3333. —Megan Stein
