Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival

When: Sun., Sept. 15, 3 p.m. 2013

Is all music folk music? This program, the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, might suggest that. After celebrating its 14th season at East Carolina University, the festival sends its piano quartet on the road to Raleigh for this Raleigh Chamber Music Guild performance, which features works by Turina, Brahms and Dvorák. World-class musicians visit the eastern part of the state for concerts, master classes and outreach programs. In this season's touring quartet, Robert McDonald tickles the ivories, joined by violinist Ara Gregorian, violist Hsin-Yun Huang and cellist Colin Carr.

Turina channels Andalusian guitar in his Piano Quartet in A Minor, strumming the three strings with generous pizzicato in the second movement. The piano takes on a dulcimer-like folk role in the final movement of Dvorák's Piano Quartet No. 2 in E Flat Major, presaging his whole-hog move into anthromusicology. The Dvorák piece owes something to Brahms' European lyricism, though. Brahms' "Werther" quartet, with its sighs of "Clara" as the composer pined for Robert Schumann's sister, completes the set. —Spencer Griffith
