This creatively assembled documentary profiles British artist Ralph Steadman, probably most famous for illustrating many of Hunter S. Thompson's books and magazine pieces. Rabid Thompson admirer Johnny Depp provides some voiceovers, and interviews Steadman in his home studio, but the bulk of the film is a mad riot of animation and multimedia mashups. Director Charlie Paul chronicles Steadman's career by way of standard archival footage and talking-head interviews (Terry Gilliam, Jann Wenner), then layers it with mixed-media sequences and time-lapse edits of the artist at work. Steadman is an interesting guy—his gentle British manner belies a lifetime of radical art and politics. But there's not much probing, and the doc is most accomplished in its kinetic visual style and energy.
