Flatbush Zombies, Bodega Bamz

When: Sun., Nov. 17, 9 p.m. 2013

New York rap is undergoing its own self-proclaimed hip-hop renaissance. Yes, this is something the region has blabbed about since Southern-style spitting over cracked-out-and-cranked crunk beats began dominating radio a decade ago; but thanks to the anything-goes rap Internet, the city is amid a mini-movement. Slippery Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky covers the mainstream with weed and syrup sounds, while frazzled, freaky characters such as Action Bronson and Bodega Bamz work the underground. Flatbush Zombies—three gruff rappers riffing on horror-core-style murder music and adding a hipster-appealing edge—are on the outskirts of this fringe. They have a song called "Bath Salts" and another named "Thug Waffle," a pair that paints the strange picture well. —Brandon Soderberg
