Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

When: Thu., Aug. 10, 8:30 p.m. 2017

J.K. Rowling's script, adapted from the 2001 footnote to the Harry Potter series, returns us to her richly imagined world of wizardry and witchcraft. Eddie Redmayne is our new hero, Newt Scamander, an eccentric British mage who has sailed to America with his marvelous, magical suitcase, filled with all manner of fantastic beasts. The trouble begins when several of them escape into old New York. Director David Yates, who helmed the last four Potter movies, brings a lighter tone to this one, which is entirely welcome. Redmayne is a compelling hero, and his performance is a delight of oddball physicality. This group of childlike adults can plausibly fit into the shoes of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. But Rowling's expansive myth-making can get unwieldy. Beasts starts out confusing, then stays that way. Still, Muggles who appreciate grand modern mythology should not miss this promising start to a new series packed with imaginative ideas and political allegories. —Glenn McDonald
