Fanghole, Furnace Head, Thera Roya

When: Thu., Jan. 2, 9 p.m. 2014

Durham's Fanghole isn't exactly a metal band, but labeling them as such is understandable. On the new collection, Pharaoh, Fanghole stretches through psych-scorched sludge that arrives at galloping crescendos. But the gloomy horror synths that close "Regret" and the spaghetti western majesty that opens "Snake Oil" suggest there's more happening here than bleary-eyed brutality. The group's greatest strength is in creating loud, limber riffs and using them to hypnotize or harass, whatever best fits the moment. It may not be metal, but Fanghole has the skills and requisite heaviness to please at least some of the faithful. —Jordan Lawrence
