Fan Appreciation Day

When: Sat., July 20, 2-10 p.m. 2013

Finally, finally, a holiday made just for me. Every Mother's Day, Father's Day, Veterans Day and Presidents Day, I patiently give credit where it's due, all the while wondering when my time will come. Now, thanks to the Carolina Theatre, here it is: a day when I'm celebrated and given free stuff just for liking movies. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. with Sidney Lumet's Deathtrap, a witty whodunit starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. At 4:30 p.m. is Stephen King's Cujo, the cheery tale of the 200-pound St. Bernard who gets bitten by a rabid bat and starts killing people. The day lightens up and closes out with a 7 p.m. screening of the epic George Lucas/Steven Spielberg collaboration Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Did we mention that not only are the movies free, but you get free popcorn, too? In case the films aren't enough for you, food trucks (not free) will be parked outside, and there'll be live music on the plaza all day long. Jim Carl, the Carolina's senior director, says he hopes this will become an annual summer event. —Emma D. Miller
