Evita | Durham Performing Arts Center | Stage | Indy Week

When: March 11-16 2014

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical of the famed First Lady of Argentina is a fascinating series of contradictions. It satirizes and lambastes the hypocrisy and self-serving goals of Eva Perón while simultaneously reveling in her glamorous, excessive image. Put bluntly: What do people remember more, the songs that accuse Evita of sleeping her way to the top or squandering money on designer clothes, or the inspiring glory of the oft-covered "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina?" Still, the darkness and satire at its core is something even the Madonna-starring film couldn't wallpaper over, and may be why this is such an enduring force on the stage. It will be most interesting to see which elements will be emphasized in this touring version—the grit or the glamour. —Zack Smith
