Escapism Film Festival

When: Sept. 19-22 2014

The Carolina's annual paean to beloved '80s films offers one of its most varied lineups yet. A few of these are very familiar to retro-screening fans (The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap). Others are odd-duck choices that made their names on VHS and cable (The Money Pit, The Ice Pirates). There are mildly traumatic all-ages fantasies (The Last Unicorn, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Neverending Story), tone-setting hits that are often imitated but never equaled (Die Hard, Stripes, Romancing the Stone) and some quirky loose change, including Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Adventures in Babysitting and The Last of the Mohicans. As always, the challenge is scheduling enough time for everything you want to see while allowing breaks for non-snack-bar sustenance. Thankfully, the festival runs an extra day this year—but pace yourself. You're getting older, even if these movies still feel like they did when you were a kid. 2 p.m.–11:25 p.m. Fri.; 12:10 p.m.–11:35 p.m. Sat.; 3 p.m.–11:35 p.m. Sun.; 2:10 p.m.–10:55 p.m. Mon., $6–$9 per screening—Zack Smith
