Endorsement was wrong . . .

The Independent was right on to state that "Bill Fletcher's thinking about sex education is Stone Age stuff and he's pretty evangelical when it comes to religion." But you were dead wrong to endorse him instead of June Atkinson for Superintendent of Public Instruction ("Indy Endorsements," Oct. 20).

In an era marked by HIV/AIDS, we desperately need responsible, medically accurate sex education. Over half of new HIV infections in the U.S. now occur in people under the age of 25. Our silence renders young people ignorant and defenseless--our silence, in this case, is deadly.

The issue of sex education is quite literally a matter of life and death. And it is young people's lives that are at stake. Abstinence-only sex education, of which Fletcher is a staunch and vocal proponent, does not work.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Central North Carolina strongly endorses Dr. June Atkinson for State Superintendent of Public Instruction because she has over 30 years of experience in education, and she will fight to ensure that North Carolina's teenagers have access to the life-saving information they need and deserve.
