In 1979, Scott Spencer published a novel about a pair of teenagers—one from a bohemian family, the other from a stuffier one—whose burning (pun intended) passion for each other leads to disaster despite their parents' efforts to keep them apart. In 1981, the book was adapted into a film that drew Spencer's ire for travestying his story. For unfathomable reasons, Hollywood has decided we need another remake, maybe just to make Spencer's head explode. (The author has called the new script "sciatica-inducing.") In fact, this story goes back much further than 1979, but let's leave poor Shakespeare out of this mess.
