El Dia de los Muertos

When: Sat., Nov. 3, 6-9 p.m. 2012

Now that Halloween's excesses of bite-size candy and stock monsters have passed, it's time to get down to the more substantial, ancient Mexican celebration of El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). Rather than reveling in the macabre, you remember and honor loved ones who have passed on through storytelling, the arts and the creation of ofrendas—small offerings of food or crafts. SEEDS, El Centro Hispano and the Scrap Exchange are teaming up to throw a free El Dia de los Muertos event featuring a performance by the Azteca Dance Troupe, spectacular illuminated shrines, a bonfire, fresh traditional food, and arts and crafts stations to create your own ofrenda or contribute to a communal one. Bring a photograph or object to remember a loved one. Donations are encouraged to support the sponsoring organizations and the families preparing the food. The free event runs 6–9 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
