Eels, Nicole Atkins, Puddles Pity Party

When: Mon., March 4, 8 p.m. 2013

In 1996, California singer-songwriter and Beck sound-alike Mark Oliver Everett and his group Eels made some modern-rock radio waves with "Novocaine for the Soul," a single and the lead track from their Jon Brion-produced debut album, Beautiful Freak. The group has released nine more albums since then, including this year's Wonderful, Glorious, but there's not much separating that initial introduction from what's followed. It's not for everyone, but for those enthralled with Everett's particular combination of droll wordsmithery and idiosyncratic musicianship, this kind of consistency must provides the same comfort and relief as the anesthetic he once sang about.
