Ed Piskor

When: Sat., Nov. 16, 6 p.m. 2013

If you're ignorant in the area of hip-hop music—perhaps you think of Ice-T as that cop on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and were surprised to hear he had a hit called "Cop Killer"—you might want to turn to Hip Hop Family Tree, a compilation of the ongoing comic chronicle by Ed Piskor. A regular feature on BoingBoing.net, Hip Hop Family Tree features clear, expressive and detailed illustrations that compress the biographies of countless hip-hop legends into a few pages with humor and intelligence, demonstrating the vitality and achievements of the medium and its artists. The first volume, which covers up to 1981 in a giant-size format, does not get a wide release until Dec.1, but Chapel Hill Comics has advance copies, along with an appearance by Piskor himself. Get an autograph and a sketch, and test your own hip-hop knowledge against his. You likely will fail. —Zack Smith
