Durham Street Piano Project

When: Thu., Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m. 2011

In conversation, Thomas Merrigan quickly admits he is "not very good at promoting or gauging people's interest." But his mission to buy an upright piano, throw some wheels on it and prowl downtown playing publicly for the people has unquestionably hit a chord. His Kickstarter campaign has netted more than twice its stated goal. "I wanted this random spontaneous opportunity to just go out and play, and now it's a little overwhelming just because it's turned into something that's bigger than I expected," he says, adding that it's made him a little shy. It's also made him plenty grateful, so he's organized a buskers' night at the Pinhook as a thanks. Other street performers, including David McKnight, a familiar face at the Durham Farmers' Market and on Ninth Street, will be on hand to trade instruments and tunes. —Ashley Melzer
