Drink Up Buttercup, Workday/ Schoolnight

When: Wed., June 2, 9:30 p.m. 2010

With its loose brand of psych pop, Drink Up Buttercup mixes harmonies with electronic dissonance. Dystopian organ ebbs and flows with jangling acoustic guitar. Manic drums bounce off the walls in a way that makes their silence slightly eerie, like the calm before the storm. Songs meander from narrative recitative to sing-along choruses reminiscent of The Beatles, if the Fab Four had recorded in a haunted opera house. Yep Roc released the Philly quartet's first full-length, Born and Thrown on a Hook, this March. The band's constantly shifting sound maintains a sense of wonder and excitement. Think locals Bombadil, but replace Peruvian flute with unbound, crashing drums. —Andrew Ritchey
