KENNEDY THEATRE, RALEIGH
WEDNESDAY, JULY 8–SUNDAY, JULY 26
When soul singer James "Thunder" Early is asked what R&B stands for, he answers, "Rough and Black." This 1981 music-industry musical reveals bruising backstage truths about a ruthless African-American record producer and the girl group he pilots to superstardom in the '60s and '70s. But it differs just enough from the real story of Motown Records and The Supremes to keep Berry Gordy and Diana Ross from suing. Good thing: Dreamgirls took six Tony Awards and played for more than three and a half years on Broadway. The blockbuster 2007 film, with Beyoncé and Jamie Foxx, won two Oscars. Music director Bryan Phoebus and director Lauren Kennedy lead a cast of 18 in this regional premiere. Brittany Walters takes on the Jennifer Hudson role, and Lawrence Street is the impresario. Alexis Sims plays Miss Ross—er, Jones. —Byron Woods8 p.m. Weds.–Sat.; 2 p.m. Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun.
