DR. JOHN & THE NITE TRIPPERS

CAROLINA THEATRE, DURHAM

SATURDAY, OCT. 3

How many New Orleans musical legends can you name who provided the inspiration for a Muppet? Don't strain yourself—there's only one. The name on his driver's license (assuming it's still in good standing) reads Malcolm John Rebennack, but the world knows the man who inspired the keyboard-playing Muppet bandleader Dr. Teeth as Dr. John. This factoid is just one small example of the way the man has worked his way into American pop culture consciousness during his five-decade career. At various points, Dr. John has been a session man, a Crescent City hoodoo man, a Top 40 star, a blues piano pasha, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a Grammy winner in the blues, jazz, rock and pop categories. When you see him strutting his stuff onstage, dishing up his singular blend of New Orleans R&B, funk, rock and whatever else floats his boat, you're sharing the room with an American icon. And while we hope the septuagenarian Night Tripper keeps on rocking forever, grab the opportunity while you can. 8 p.m., $41$106, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. —Jim Allen
