Downtown 81

When: Fri., April 8, 8 p.m. 2011

Take a trip to the 1981 Manhattan art scene with this time capsule, also known as New York Beat, lost for years and finally released in 2001. Famed painter Jean Michel Basquiat stars in this magical-realism tale as an artist similar to himself who wanders the street looking for a way to sell his art. En route, he encounters the likes of James White & the Blacks, Fab Five Freddy, Debbie Harry, Lee Quinones and many more. Basquiat's actual voice isn't in the film, due to the loss of the original audio (actor Saul Williams dubbed him), but many of the live club performances were preserved. It's a portrait of an era gone by, filled with great images and music. The screening, which starts at 8 p.m., is $5, or $3.50 for members of the museum, Cinema Inc. and Galaxy Cinema. —Zack Smith

Price: $5 ($3.50 for students)
