Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall

When: Fri., April 12, 8 p.m. 2013

Way, way, way, way, way before adorable girls-next-door like Sally Field, Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon and current media darling Jennifer Lawrence started snatching up A-list roles and Oscar statuettes, there was Mary Pickford. But have any of those actors founded a studio, as Pickford did with United Artists? The NCMA pays tribute to America's original sweetheart (who happened to be Canadian) with a special showing of this rarely seen, 135-minute period-piece epic from 1924. This silent movie stars Pickford (who also serves as co-director) as a Tudor-era heiress with a flair for drama and adventure. The screening will have live piano accompaniment from Ethan Uslan. —Craig D. Lindsey
