Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faceless, Royal Thunder

When: Thu., May 30, 8 p.m. 2013

New Jersey's Dillinger Escape Plan has attracted praise and built a fervent cult following; one critic even dubbed them "the Radiohead of metalcore." Few bands so nimbly balance brains and brawn; their frantic mathematical rhythms feel less like complex equations than chaos theory in practice. On record, it's fairly approachable, with splattered elements of '90s hardcore and technical death metal opening occasionally for a spacious melody. The band describes its latest, the lean and visceral One of Us Is the Killer, as "very punk, very hardcore influenced." On stage, DEP has long been notorious for physical intensity; band members lunge into the audience and swing their instruments like weapons. With a meaner, more streamlined batch of material, they should be at their most volatile. With The Faceless and Royal Thunder. —Bryan C. Reed
