DICK DIVER & SPIDER BAGS

NIGHTLIGHT, CHAPEL HILL

THURSDAY, JULY 9

Dick Diver and Spider Bags do not play rock 'n' roll in the same way: From Melbourne, the four-piece Dick Diver is mannered, restrained and instantly memorable, suggesting another island take on Australia's The Go-Betweens and New Zealand's The Clean. Even on this year's more agitated and aggravated Melbourne, Florida, there's a certain twee softness to the songs, so that the hooks hit from a slight distance. Don't take it as a dis, though, as the 12-song set is one of the year's most beguiling LPs. But the Carrboro quartet Spider Bags don't mind many manners, as their garage-rock glories let loose in fits of rhythm and sheets of distorted riffs. Dan McGee howls the surreal blues of his soul, while the mighty band around him turns those laments into excuses to celebrate existence itself. No, these acts don't match, but they're puzzle pieces for a perfect set. 9:30 p.m., $10–$12, 405 1/2 W.
