Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba, Zansa

When: Fri., June 6, 8 p.m. 2014

From North Carolina's brimming West African music scene, two of the most dynamic bands face off: Carrboro's Kaira Ba and Asheville's Zansa. Both fuse talent from overseas with local players, together creating a modern approach to traditional dance music. Kaira Ba's Diali Cissokho, a Senegalese griot, launches Manding vocals and fiery kora technique against interweaving guitar and basslines, interlocked drums and percussion. Opener Zansa adds violin to a mix of guitars, drums and percussion, all led by Ivory Coast frontman and master djembe drummer Adama Dembele. Expect sympathetic energy (and perhaps a collaboration?) when these two share what's a must-see for African music aficionados and diggers of deep dance grooves. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger

Price: $10–$12
