Devil | Indy Week

Rated PG-13 80 min. 2010

A locked-room mystery with underpinnings of satanic folklore, Devil's action mostly unfolds in a stalled elevator of a Philadelphia office building. Five unlucky passengers of dubious backgrounds are terrorized by an unseen, murderous force. One passenger is The Devil. In theory, this makes for a creepy, brilliant tale, but screenwriter Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) and director John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine) fail to execute a fully developed thriller, relying instead on awkward pacing and cloying subplots. Part of the blame lies firmly on the shoulders of M. Night Shyamalan whose conceptual vision leads the film down a well-worn path of cheap third-act tricks.
