After the Trinity test of the first nuclear bomb, Kenneth Bainbridge infamously remarked to J. Robert Oppenheimer, "Now we are all sons of bitches." It's anyone's guess what the women of the Oak Ridge, Tenn., facility thought when they discovered the nature of their own work. Denise Kiernan's The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II unveils an astonishing lost story of American history, of thousands of Southern civilian girls working in the factories of a secret city in the mountains of Tennessee for what they knew to be "war-ending" work—on one of the most important and devastating projects in human history. In her book, Kiernan speaks with the surviving workers of Oak Ridge, many in their 80s and 90s. Kiernan also appears at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill at noon Saturday. —Zack Smith
