Deerhunter, Crystal Stilts

When: Sun., Sept. 22, 9 p.m. 2013

The popular indie rock band Deerhunter, led by charismatic guitarist and howler Bradford Cox, play blistering psychedelic rock, sweetly clotted pop and ambient garage rock with a sense of playful menace. On stage, the trim recorded versions of their songs unravel and become blown-out. Shortly before the release of their latest album, Monomania, they visited the Triangle for an impromptu show in a Durham art gallery. They conceded none of their clangorous guitar effects in the small space, which pulsed and rang with dangerous frequencies, and ended in a brutally mesmeric feedback epic that left people wandering Parrish Street looking stunned and lizard-brained. The full-tilt Monomania, which emphasizes raucous musicianship over atmospheric coating, now gets a proper local showing. The proficient but nonprovocative Brooklyn jangle-pop band Crystal Stilts opens, a neutral start for the spectacle—whether fearsome or desultory—that doubtlessly will follow. —Brian Howe
