Deceased, Colossus, No Tomorrow, Gnawed

When: Sat., Oct. 22, 9:30 p.m. 2011

The clarity in Deceased's arrangements is almost refreshing. Rather than an overwhelming splatter of blast-beats and squealing guitars, there's space and melody; rather than vocals so guttural that they're indecipherable, the growl comes from higher in the throat. Like many of its death metal peers who've passed the quarter-century mark, Deceased is no longer at the genre's fringe. Rather, the Virginia band maintains a strong position at its core. As this year's Surreal Overdose attests, Deceased has aged remarkably well, holding strong alongside still-active vets such as Obituary. Tonight, the stalwarts play host to Colossus' Judas-Priestly anthems, No Tomorrow's D-Beat battery and Richmond's newly minted Gnawed. Bryan C. Reed
