Dawes, Shovels & Rope

When: Wed., June 12, 8:30 p.m. 2013

Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes keep turning up as the tagalong of choice with their legendary mentors. Last month they appeared on David Letterman's show backing up John Fogerty; previously they'd assisted Jackson Browne when he played the initial Occupy rallies in New York. If their sound is a little too directly divined from the early-'70s SoCal aesthetic, that has helped set them apart from the modern indie-folk boom. Stories Don't End, released in April, continues in the rich melodic vein of its two predecessors. They share the bill with fast-rising South Carolina guitar-and-drums duo Shovels & Rope, who recently taped an Austin City Limits episode that'll air on PBS later in the year. —Peter Blackstock
