Dawes, Blitzen Trapper, Smoke Fairies

When: Sat., Oct. 22, 8 p.m. 2011

If you've ever doubted critical talk of the crossover occurring all across popular music, from indie to mainstream and country to rock and all of it to everything else, here's a double bill to shush your suspicions. Portland's Blitzen Trapper first earned notice as a choose-a-new-influence band struck between the legacies of The Pixies, Pavement, The Band and The Dead, though they've steadily trended toward the latter pair while not forsaking the wilder instincts of the former pair. Meanwhile, Dawes' blue-eyed, Oxford-cloth roots-rock sounds the way a new button-down from J. Crew looks—predictable, comfortable and bound to always have an audience. Five years ago, a co-headlining tour would have been an ostracizing act for Dawes and an uncool one for Blitzen Trapper; now, it almost makes too much sense. Smoke Fairies open the 8 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
