DANIEL WALLACE: THE CAT'S PAJAMAS

SATURDAY, JAN. 17, DURHAM

THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—Daniel Wallace, author of Big Fish, has written and illustrated a new children's storybook called The Cat's Pajamas. It stars a young cat named Louis Fellini who lived "a long time ago when cats wore clothes, worked in cities, and went on picnics." But while all the other cats dressed the same, Louis wanted to be different, donning, to his parents' horror, the likes of a grass skirt and a paper bag. The message is the timeless children's book one of being yourself. The manneredly messy art is like Richard Scarry by way of Roz Chast. The story is full of funny touches for adults (a "Hang in There!" motivational cat poster can be seen on Louis' wall). This Saturday-morning pajama party features milk and cookies, a reading and a signing. Wear your PJs, as the author will be sporting his. 11 a.m., free, 720 Ninth St., Durham, 919-286-2700, www.regulatorbookshop.com. —Brian Howe
